Winter Stays

We personally love being in our cozy cottage in the winter. Here are some suggestions to ensure your stay will be pleasant if it gets really cold:

Start the wood stove as soon as you get in/or up in the morning. The wood heater will take over from the propane and electric heater and add both cheer and warmth to the space. Turn the electric heater down once the room reaches about 68 degrees.

Wear winter underwear (tights or long-johns). Dress in layers, and bring warm woolly sweaters. Wear a couple of layers of woolen stockings and moccasins.

Use the fans to move the air down to the main areas during the day; turn off at night if sleeping in the loft.

The loft - one of our favourite sleeping spot - gets very warm. Suggestion: at night, set the propane and electric heaters no higher than 10 degrees so you won't get too warm. (When you leave, turn down to 5 degrees.)

Keep the door to the bedroom open to ensure good airflow for the propane heaters.

Our caretakers will show you how to use the sauna. Saunas are absolutely wonderful in the wintertime - once your body temperature has heated up, you can actually stand outside in serious sub-zero weather, steaming away! We tried the "snow angel" trick that the Finns do, but only once! Only recommended for those brave souls that like to have tried everything once.

There is now an outside electrical plug to warm the block heater for your vehicle.
